INFORMATION ON THE PELOPONNESE-SIGHTS
The fabulous unspoilt region of the Messinian Peloponnese is a haven of tranquillity and beauty.
It boasts some of the finest beaches in Greece, many with blue flag recognition.
Crystal clear sea water fed by underground mountain streams provides swimming of the highest quality and safety.
There is a great variety of restaurants all along the sea-front, and as mass-tourism doesn't exist, the food is absolutely superb, cooked with local fresh produce of vegetables, meat, fish, and the well renowned Kalamata virgin olive oil.
The region possesses some of the most exquisite sights in Greece such as:
The caves of Dyros», million years old approx. 1 ½ hours
The byzantine town of Mystras» approx. 2 hours;
The medieval town of Monemvasia» approx. 4 hours;
Ancient Olympia», where the Olympic games first took place in the ancient world approx. 2 ½ hours;
Ancient Epidaurus» with its magnificent theatre, a miracle of the ancient world, still very active during the summer season, hosting many famous artists from all over the world, approx. 2 ½ hours;
Picturesque Gythion» with its breathtaking scenery, approx. 2 hours;
Pretty Kyparissia», approx. 1 hour.
“The eyes of Venice” as they used to be called during medieval times, i.e. Koroni and Methoni and their medieval castles, as well as the whole peninsula Petalidi-Koroni-Finikounda-Methoni-Pylos, (Messinian County) is an area that shouldn’t be missed.
Petalidi is approx. 40 mins
Chrani approx. 50 mins
Koroni and its medieval castle approx. 50-60 mins
Then comes Finikounda with long, white, sandy beaches, approx. 1 hour 15 mins.
Pylos, a breath-taking little town with a castle and lovely restaurants is approx 1 hour.
Yalova (approx. 1 hour) is an amazingly beautiful little village with a lagoon with all kinds of bird species, the Mediterranean chameleon, etc
Methoni is 10 mins drive from Pylos and has a beautiful medieval castle right at the sea.
You could take this trip in one day starting with Petalidi and ending in Yalova and then back on the other road to Kalamata.
The rugged mountain peninsula called «the Mani» is another very special area of Peloponnes in many ways;
historically it was never truly conquered by the Turks;
the architecture of its stone-houses and «tower-houses», (erected due to tribal feuds, and in order to keep invaders out), are unique and protected by the Ministry of Civilization.
The Mani has a way of casting its spell on people!
Verga, where this stylish villa is located, is actually the beginning of the Mani.
You could take another one-day trip to see the Messinian Mani.
First stop is Kitries, a little fishing village with nice restaurants at the sea, approx. 15 mins.
Then Kardamyli (approx. 45 mins from Kalamata), Stoupa, Ag. Nicholaos and then Ag. Dimitrios.
When you take this trip, you could swim in Stoupa, Kalogries.
There are many more beautiful sights in the Messinian Peloponnese to visit, or you can just relax at the beach and do nothing, or spend the evening on our large veranda or BBQ area taking in the stunning sea views and sun-set with a glass of red wine.
The Capital of the Messinian Peloponnes is Kalamata, with 60.000 inhabitants (in Kalamata and surrounding area), a small town with all the facilities and infrastructure of a city, but without the disadvantages of a big city.
It comprises a comprehensive variety of local and international retail and business outlets, theatres, cinemas, a cultural centre with art gallery and library. There are music, dancing and art schools, churches, hospitals, cafès, restaurants, a swimming pool, a public stadium, gyms and exercise centres, ski resorts within reasonable distance, and life both during summer and winter.
Another attraction is the famous “Dance Festival of Kalamata”. It is held at the castle of Kalamata and hosts some of the most exquisite dance performances and happenings with renowned artists from all over the world during the summer months. Ask us about the programme if you are coming in July and/or August.
The promenade of Kalamata is fantastic with kms long white sandy beaches, beautiful cafés, tavernas and restaurants at the sea, etc, etc.
People are surprised to find that Kalamata is a sophisticated little town, with wonderful shops, cafés, tavernas, pubs, bars, etc
The villa is located approx. 3-4 mins drive from Verga pebble secluded beach, and 5 mins drive to Kalamata’s golden sandy beaches, and the promenade.
You can swim anywhere you like.
And last but not least is the climate. The Peloponnese being the Southern most part of the mainland, has wonderful, mild winters, lovely summers, stunningly beautiful and colourful springs and autumns.
All the above mentioned combined with a much slower pace of life, a safe and natural environment, a good, healthy diet due to all the fresh vegetables, fruit, olives, virgin olive oil etc, make the Peloponnese an ideal place for holidays.
